Church Comments about COVID-19

(Update 3/18/20)

Important Information from First Brethren – Online Services Only

Service Update_v1_1920x1080

Since the church is not the building, but rather the people, sometimes we are “Gathered” and sometimes the church is “Scattered.” The concerns over jeopardizing the health of the more vulnerable in our church family and community have brought us to the decision to suspend our usual gathered time on Sunday mornings for the next two weeks (March 22 & 29). This is an opportunity for us to try out some new ways of bringing the family together. Online video worship services will be pre-recorded and “aired” on Sunday mornings at the usual 9:15 and 10:30 times. However, these may be viewed any time thereafter (see access instructions below).

Home Worship: For these two Sundays, we are encouraging you to participate in-Home Worship either alone, with your family, or with others you invite in – perhaps even for an extended time for a meal, games, and conversation. Let this be a time when the “scattered church” grows in faith, caring for and connecting with one another, prayer, and re-aligned spiritual priorities. To watch the services as they “air”:

  1. Follow this link to our YouTube Channel
  2. Click the red Subscribe button towards the top right side of the page
  3. Click the bell icon that appears next to the Subscribe button and choose “All” to be notified when videos are scheduled to premiere.
  4. We will also send an email and post on Facebook the day before (Saturday) with a direct link to each service.

Prayer & Small Gatherings: The church is still available to you even though we’re not “gathering” at our usual times and ways. Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. the sanctuary will be open for prayer, meditation, journaling, reading, and personal/family worship. Additionally, you are welcome to utilize specific church spaces for small gatherings to eat together, play games, do e-learning, or study the Word. These spaces include the library, kitchen, fellowship hall, and brick house. Please call the office to reserve your time and space.

Virtual Groups & Classes: During this time you can virtually connect with your church friends and family. The church has purchased a Zoom account available for use by anyone in our congregation. This tool will make it possible for your classes, groups, and ministries to meet together from your homes and continue to study, pray, laugh, and care for one another. Contact the office to find out how you can schedule a Zoom meeting for your group.

Financial Support: Your continued giving is important to the ministries and organizations that depend on our financial support. Individuals who wish to give online may do so by using the church app or website. Contributions can also be mailed to or dropped off at the church office.

We look forward to being a “Gathered” church again. In the meantime, may this be a season of spiritual growth and family connection. May God find us faithful to BE THE CHURCH wherever we are and in whatever we face. Our staff and leadership are praying for you and are available to you as needed. Please do not hesitate to call. Blessings to you all.

(Update 3/17/20)

Schedule Changes – Children & Youth Activities

Due to the increased guidance this week regarding gathering in groups, both Club RIOT/KFC and Youth Group will not be held in person (at least for this week). The Children’s Discipleship and Youth Discipleship Ministries want to equip you and your children to continue to grow spiritually during this time. We encourage you to use the regularly scheduled meeting time to do the following lessons in your home.

Club RIOT & KFC

This week’s Altitude message is that As a Follower of Christ, I will be Humble! We may not be meeting together in a large group but your family can still enjoy this time by doing the following:

Comments from Church Leadership

Caution, not fear, is the response we wish to encourage in our congregation. Our plan is to continue to gather for worship and classes on Sundays, but to limit direct contact with one another. Those in the congregation who feel vulnerable or susceptible to illness may wish to suspend their interaction with others. Should you choose to do so, we encourage you to find a televised worship service, listen to our services online (www.nmfbc.org/recent-sermons ), or study the Word in your home.
This is a time for prayer and trust; a time to draw near to God, not to be consumed by worry. Remember our all-church study just a year ago?  “ Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).  It is time for us to put these principles to practice. This is a time to lean into the One Another’s of Scripture: pray, encourage, help, care for, and love one another, just to name a few. There are still ways to do this. Look for God in the midst of your concern. How is He getting your attention? How does He want you to respond? He is here. He is near.
Please use the church app or website to listen to sermons, make donations, or share prayer needs. And feel free to contact the office, your class or small group, should you have a need. As with other illnesses, if you are feeling sick with fever, refrain from exposing others by limiting direct contact until you are well. And wash your hands often…long enough to say the Lord’s Prayer or sing the Doxology 🙂
God’s blessings to you all.
